The purpose of Cosmetics is to enhance beauty and care for the body. This, of course, depending on what is understood as beauty or care in the different cultures of the world. Many cosmetic products aim at and long ago used to aim at making aging and the limitations of the body less visible. In ancient Egypt e.g., during the time of the pharaohs, necro cosmetics were developed to keep a corpse from declining. The aim of many cosmetic products of modern times is also to stop aging or make it less visible. Generally, cosmetics shouldn't only have a beautifying effect, but at least increase the awareness of life as well; possibly express something social, too. The adornment and care of the body is as old as mankind itself. In the cosmetic industry of today, one distinguishes roughly between decorative cosmetics and care cosmetics. The purpose of care cosmetics is to try to support and maintain the beauty of skin and hair - this includes, for example, creams, lotions, scrubs, shampoos, toothpastes, mouthwash and also products that are increasingly being directed at men, e.g. shaving foam and aftershave. The purpose of decorative cosmetics, however, is to enhance the look by means of colour cosmetics - examples are make up, mascara, eyeshadow, lipstick or rouge.
